Congratulations!

You're An Intermediate Player.

Here's What To Do Next...

6 Years In The Making, 26 Video Lessons (217 minutes), 13 TAB Sheets and 22 Intermediate Songs

This course was tried and tested on my beginner students as they turned into intermediate players over a 6 year period. It shares my passion for teaching progressing players in a detailed and engaging way.

So you're no longer a beginner, but you understand that you didn't get this far without guidance, encouragement and a roadmap of lessons.

The issue with being an intermediate player is our progress can feel slower. However, it's still important to celebrate those "little wins". That's why Intermediate Acoustic has a series of shorter songs that focus on polishing and refining our intermediate techniques.

Not only this but Intermediate Acoustic reinforces relevant and useful music theory principles to take your playing beyond the beginner stages.

The course has LIFETIME access and is available to stream or download.

How To Make Consistent Progress

A guitar course is only as good as how much it holds you accountable to practice.

When learning guitar having homework can motivate and solidify what you're learning.

7 of the lessons inside Intermediate Acoustic have homework objectives. In many cases I'm asking you to email me your answers.

I find this a great way to learn music theory and apply new techniques to your playing.

While it's not essential to answer and play the homework assignments, you'll certainly understand a lot more if you do.

What's Inside Intermediate Acoustic?

Lesson 1How To Practice Barre Chords Effectively + Playing Tips

Over the last 15 years of teaching barre chords this lesson is my most informed goldmine to date! Both the correct barring techniques and a selection of songs to motivate your practice. The only way to master barre chords is to get stuck in and this lesson is like a catalyst to your barre chord practice.

Lesson 2Exploring Barre Chords + Note Theory

Barre chords are so much more than new chords. They unlock your theory knowledge so you can play pretty much every common guitar chord. This is how to get started and throughout the course we'll be learning the how and why of barre chords.

Lesson 3Clear & Punchy Hammer Ons + Flick Offs

This is the start of the "little win" songs that will motivate and inspire your practice. Even as beginners we might have tried hammer ons and flick offs, but they're often inconsistent and out of time without us even realising it. This lesson is set out to change that. There's also links to 5 classic songs that make this technique really fun to practice.

Lesson 4 How To Play Great Sounding Slides

Another "little win" song lesson. Don't forget you get the TAB and the Guitar Pro file. Accuracy with sliding is perhaps the biggest hurdle for intermediate players. Also, you'll learn about the 2 different types of guitar slides and how to use them.

Lesson 5How To Play Guitar Harmonics with "Harp Harmonics" Bonus Lesson

Harmonics are another technique that is easy to pick up but challenging to master. I've created a short 8 bar song to hone your harmonic technique. There's also a bonus lesson on how to play Harp Harmonics. A wonderful technique that makes your acoustic sound ethereal and original. It's a challenge to pick up, but more than worth it when you get it!

Lesson 64 New Barre Chord Shapes

Time to progress from the earlier barre chord lessons and put these 4 new barre shapes into action. With these in your repertoire you'll be able to play 4 different chord voicings in every key. On top of that you'll be given the knowledge to do this starting on the E or A string. This is why you CAN'T ignore barre chords forever. There are some chords that are either strange shapes or bigger stretches to play as open chords. Barres, while challenging at first, make chords easier to fret once you have this essential barre chord knowledge.

Lesson 7How To Identify Barre Chords – Guess This Song?

This lesson builds on the accountability that I've talked about below. You'll be watching a video of me playing a very famous guitar song with barre chords and I'd like you to identify the chords and email them to me. This is a great visual and ear test for your new barre chord knowledge and of course you can play this classic song along with me.

Lesson 8Here There and Everywhere – Using Your New Barre Chords

This lesser known but still exceptional Beatles song is a great project to start figuring out how to play barre chords yourself. I'll be giving you the chords and words and then sending you on your way to figure out how to play them as barre chords with as little fret movement as possible. This lesson helps solidify your barre chord theory knowledge and gives you plenty of practice to boot.

Lesson 9Adding Bass Notes To Your Songs

Bass note playing is the doorway to intermediate strumming. They take you beyond strumming all the strings of a chord and they create texture and musicality within your rhythm guitar. Refining your strumming hand is essential as you move into becoming an intermediate player. This lesson has a "little win song" to get you practising and 6 popular acoustic songs that you can choose to practice this versatile technique.

Lesson 10How To Play Playing Moody Bends

While bending happens a lot more in the electric guitar world they shouldn't be overlooked by the acoustic intermediate players. You'll learn what the bends look like in the TAB and how to perform them. I've created a fun blues song that I think is really catchy to help you practice acoustic bending.

Lesson 11Percussive Playing + (1 Song With 7 Techniques)

We're now at the stage of summarising the techniques we've learnt so far. This great song features slides, hammer ons, flick offs, bass notes and partial chord strumming. It also introduces percussive playing. This is when you hit the guitar so it makes a sound like a drum. This style of guitar is hugely popular with the likes of Ed Sheeran, John Mayer and Newton Falkner. It's a great technique that can make your strumming sound even more rhythmical.

Lesson 12Music Theory 101 – The Major Scale

I believe that when music theory is taught clearly and with a practical application from the very first lesson it can provide massive insights and realisations for progressing players. It's not essential to know music theory but it certainly can't hinder your progress. This lesson unlocks the door to future lessons on The Nashville System, Triads and The CAGED Approach. Once again homework objectives are set to make sure you understand and apply the concepts being taught.

Lesson 13Intermediate Fingerstyle Advice + Song List

With your free bonus courses you're getting Beyond Fingerstyle Freedom which is a 30 lesson intermediate fingerstyle course. However this lesson focuses on how to play faster fingerstyle using a technique called speed training. The lesson also features 5 intermediate acoustic songs that will test your travis picking and fretting.

Lesson 14The Revelations of The Nashville System

Quite simply my favourite music theory concept. It opens our eyes to keys, chord choices and why we keep finding the same order of chords time and time again. It helps you figure out songs for yourself. Once you've identified the key you'll be surprised as to how this system can help you find the chords. This lesson cements your learning with a 2 part homework assignment that asks you to figure out a chord sequence within a key. You'll also be figuring out the key of two very famous songs.

Lesson 15 5 Songs For Intermediate Classical Students

As you gain experience you begin to choose your favourite style and speciality. For many acoustic players this is classical (nylon string) guitar. This lesson features 5 of my favourite progressing classical projects. These are songs that I keep coming back to year after year. You can pick them up relatively quickly, but mastering is where the songs become fun.

Lessons 16 + 17The Beauty of Triads

This two part lesson series shows you how to use and play chord triads. You'll not only be shown the theory and the "why" but also how to practice this versatile concept. It's great when you're playing with other guitarists. It's also fertile knowledge for your understanding of the notes on the fretboard. At the end of both lessons you have backing tracks to start practising your triads and hearing the difference they can make when being played over open chords.

Lesson 18The CAGED System Explained

Furthering your practical music theory knowledge we find the CAGED system. Perhaps being an intermediate player is playing your beginner chords but in different positions up and down the neck? The CAGED system will not only show you how to do this (this is very similar to the triad lesson) but it will also help you learn the notes on the fretboard in a more efficient manner. CAGED chords give a different flavour to our beginner open chords and they can sound great when you're jamming with other guitarists or along to a backing track.

Lesson 19Dynamics – The Secret Sauce For Intermediate Players

In my opinion, dynamics (loud and quiet) are one of the quintessential factors that makes the difference between a beginner and an intermediate player. This is controversial but in my opinion a guitarists "feel" is mostly made up of how loud and quiet they play certain parts of a song. Learning to use dynamics within a song can add increased emotion and feeling. This lesson will start that journey for you. Teaching you to play as quiet and as loud as possible and all areas in-between!
