The G guitar chord is extremely popular and versatile for acoustic guitar players.
It can be played with the middle, ring and pinky (like the picture) or it with the index, middle and ring.
As a teacher I’m an advocate of the approach in the picture as this strengthens your weaker fingers (ring and pinky) from the early stages. It’s also much easier to change to C or F using these fingers. This chord change happens a lot in songs. You should decide what fingers to use depending on what chord you are changing from and to.
