Advancing Courses + Books
As a teacher I would love to be able to teach you every musical style and every advanced technique, but it’s just not possible.
While I will always be making courses here at LGIL Premium, I’ve included my favourite advancing courses from my partner site (Truefire.com) that I’ve studied over the years. I’ve used Truefire for the last 6 years and they’ve always offered fair priced courses taught by proficient and skilled guitarists.

Fingerstyle blues licks/tricks and techniques taught by the awesome David Hamburger. For beginner fingerstyle blues see my course Drue’s Blues
In Beyond Fingerstyle Freedom I teach you 6 songs with alternate tunings. Genfan’s course takes this approach even further.
In Intermediate Acoustic I introduce the CAGED system, but Eric’s course takes it a whole lot further. Valuable fretboard navigation and music theory.
Singing and playing guitar is something I’m passionate about. Learning to sing is just like learning guitar, it takes patience and training new muscles in your body. I recommended your own vocal coach, however this course will give you an overview of the things you would learn with a singing teacher.
I mention Andy Mckee’s awesome song Drifting in Intermediate Acoustic. This course teaches you his unique percussive style.
It’s my intention to create a looping course, but for now please check out Carl’s course. Looping can be great for improvising and creating your own song arrangements.
As the author of this course states “It’s great to have a repertoire of classical songs”. I couldn’t agree more! I’ve included a 5 song list of my favourite classical intermediate projects here.
Learning to record your own guitar is incredibly useful. This free course at Truefire takes you through the basics. Including how to setup your computer to record and what equipment and programs to use.
Martin Simpson Teaches Alternate Tunings
When you’ve been playing guitar a little while you’ll evetually experiment with alternate tunings. They can offer something new and fresh to our guitar sound.
This book is a fantastic introduction and practical application into this alternate world. With useful theory related explanations and Martin’s wonderful original songs.
For me this book was most useful with creativity. Once you learn some common chord shapes you can really experiment with new voices on guitar.
Music Theory - Guitar Method
Music theory has always eluded me. In my first 7 years of learning I didn’t care how a C chord was made, I just wanted to play it. This book changed everything. It goes to great lengths to show you how to make the theory relevant to guitar playing. It uses simple terms, practical tests, and the CD is very helpful.
Solo Pieces For Acoustic Guitar - Volume 1
Another finger style book that I enjoy playing through. The book pictured is Volume 1, but there’s also a Volume 2. These 2 books are more intermediate than Fingerpicking Pop Hits, but they have some great interpretations, such as Hallelujah, Mad World, Brown Eyed Girl and Nothing Else Matters.
Fingerstyle Blues Songbook
If you love fingerstyle blues (which for many it’s a passion) then this book is for you.
Some fantastic fun and memorable songs in this. Both middle beginner and intermediate players are catered for.
There’s even lessons on slide and bottleneck blues guitar.
Fingerstyle Guitar Bible
Every song in this book is two things…
1: A classic.
2: A challenge.
I keep coming back to this book as the years go on. There’s some terrific arrangements from some of the world’s most accomplished acoustic songwriters.
