Clean & Clear Hammer Ons + Flick Offs - Lesson 3

As a beginner you might have tried hammer ons and flick offs (AKA pull offs).

Hammer ons in particular are a technique that are easy to understand and perform, but challenging to keep consistent with even tone for each one.

The absolute best piece of advice I have for both hammer ons and flick offs is to listen to what you’re doing. A hammer on and flick off should have the same volume level as a picked note.

Sure you can control that volume but for now aim for the same volume as often times both hammer ons and flicks off end up being played quietly by inexperienced players.

For hammer ons hit the middle of the fret. Also, once you’ve hit the hammer on leave your finger pressed down to let the hammered note ring out. You can use the bottom of your finger callous to hit the string with a hammer on.

The biggest pitfall with both techniques as a beginner is playing them too quickly. Remember, just because it’s your fretting hand picking the note it doesn’t mean there’s any less rhythm. Observe the rhythm of the hammer ons and flick offs.
